1999 Ford SVT Cobra Mustang
Overview
The 1999 SVT Cobra Mustang platforms
was built on a standard Mustang
GT chassis as in previous years. However, this year would see
the introduction of the IRS, ABS, and traction control. The motor
would also receive a few more horsepower from a set of revised cylinder
heads. When coupled with huge Brembo brakes front and rear the Cobra
emerged as a true corner carving muscle car.
As in the previous three production years the Cobra Mustang used
the 4.6 double overhead cam V8 motor. In 1999 the Cobra received
a new set of cylinder heads and a few other minor changes which
increased power output to 320hp. However, drag strip performance
was only marginally better than the 260hp Mustang GT model due to
severe flow restrictions in the intake and exhaust system by casting
flash. For initiated a recall which includes new intake, computer
program, and less restrictive mufflers. Following recalls the Cobra
Mustang quarter mile times dropped from 14.0's to 13.50's. The forced
recall for Ford was the first "black-eye" for SVT. Ford
would choose to not release another standard Cobra model until 2001.
Cobra Mustang fans were in for quite a surprise with the release
of the race oriented 2000 Cobra R. Before the end of the 2000 year
model Ford would sell 4040 Cobra's.
The exterior of the 1999 Cobra Mustang features small round fog
lamps not found on the GT version, a small reverse scoop on the
hood, and a grill pony emblem without the chrome bezel. Otherwise
the Cobra is nearly identical to the standard Mustang GT version.
