1968 Plymouth Road Runner

The 1968 Plymouth Road Runner was an entirely new vehicle for Plymouth (as was the GTX). This car was designed for the street cruising group who couldn't afford the big dollar cars. As such, the Road Runner have little frills.

On the outside the Road Runner has little trim and decoration. Simple lines, tiny road runner icon on the doors, and round side marker lights are about the only decorations. However, the hood features a hi performance dual bulge hood with optional Air Grabber cool air induction. The air system was controlled by a switch under the dash.

The interior of the Road Runner were "bare bones". You would expect a simple bucket seat, basic gauges, and door panels. Those electing for an automatic transmission received column shift. You also were limited to three interior colors; two tone blue, tan, or sliver with black.

However, what lacked in appearance was made up for under the car. Road Runners featured heavy duty suspensions and power to spare. You had a choice of the strong A833 4 speed transmission or 727 TorqueFlight automatic. The standard rear gearing was 3.23 but buyers could option for 3.55's. You could choose from the base 383 magnum or choose the 426 hemi. If buyers opted for a Hemi and a 4 speed they received the indestructible Dana 60 rear end with 3.54 gears.

Plymouth found a new success in the Road Runner and sold over 45,000 cars in the first year.
