1971 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am
The 1971 Pontiac Firebird was very much the same as the 1970 Firebird
model. Changes were limited to some minor interior changes and a
new motor option.
As in previous years, the Trans Am edition received front and rear
air dams, scoops, upgraded suspension, motor, and decal packages.
The suspension on Trans Am's was upgraded to include massive torsion
bars, heavy duty disc/drum brakes, and quick ratio steering.
The big news for 1971 was GM's motor changes to run the cars on
unleaded gasoline. Gone were the Ram Air 400 motors, althought a
400cid was still available. The new addition to the lineup were
two 455cid motors. The performance oriented 455 was available in
the Trans Am and was rated at 335hp and 480lbs/ft of torque.
